Magnus was not the easiest prince to look after. Most of the time, he managed to find a way to slip away from his guards and make his way out of the castle walls until he was found again a couple of hours later. This habit hadn’t changed even as he’d grown up despite the large number of different guards who had been assigned to look after him. But there was one guard who was managing to do a better job at keeping him where he was supposed to be than the others.
“I know you’re my guard and you’re doing a very good job but can you please just– get distracted once in a while.”
Keeping watch over royalty was never particularly enjoyable. Keeping watch over this particular prince, was downright exhausting, Alec had managed to do a spectacular job, however. He was more observant than the others. Or maybe it was just that they pretended not to notice. Either way, Alec was determined to do his job.
“Distractions get you killed, your Highness.” He was blunt, no nonsense. Coming from a long line of soldiers, everything he knew had been taught to him since he could walk. No distractions, no being friendly. He was there to make sure the prince was safe.
“I’m not dead yet.” How many times had he already had this discussion? Far too many. But he was far too stubborn to simply give in.
He dropped down into a chair with a heavy sigh and leaned his head back. So much for being able to do what you wanted as a prince. That had never been an option for him. “You’re too serious, Alec. Not just you, every single one of my guards.” He could never talk to them like they were a friend, he could never joke with them or do anything with them except escape them. And he probably saw them more than he saw anyone else.
