Telling the others what happened was one of the worst things Magnus had to do. To see the way another part of them shattered into a million pieces, broke him even more. He locked himself up in his apartment, not answering calls or messages, barely eating. He just lay there.
He only ventured out to get Chairman Meow some food and see how Isabelle and Jace were doing. He was only ever intending on going straight back to his apartment and return to what he’d been doing before; precisely nothing. But he hadn’t anticipated ever bumping into Alec.
His body jolted as his gaze met with those familiar blue eyes, stopping completely still, not even blinking. “Alexander–”
“Do I know you?” Alec asked, clearly confused as to how this man knew his name. He certainly didn’t recognize him. He didn’t know many people, because he had never been good at making friends. He was too quiet, too reserved for most people. That’s probably why he loved New York so much, it was easy to disappear into the crowd, “Because you seem to know me. Or at least you know my name. But uh, I go by Alec.”
The man was eccentric, that was for sure. But he was incredibly attractive and Alec hadn’t been attracted to any man for a long time. He didn’t look like he was feeling well though and Alec felt a sudden urge to make sure he was okay.
“You feeling alright? You look like you haven’t slept in weeks.”
If he didn’t have enough self control, he probably could have broken down then and there in the middle of the street. But he didn’t, just sucked in a shaky breath to try and steady himself and his voice before he answered the questions. “Sorry.” He breathed softly.
He’d always planned on finding Alec again but not like this. And not when he wasn’t ready to face what happened. A hand lifted to rub the back of his neck as a weak smile was forced onto his lips.
“Insomnia. I’m fine, thank you.”
